For about a year now, I’ve been working on a deeply personal and inspiring photography project that focuses on three-legged pets. I’ve named it The Tripawed Project, a nod to my previous work, The Black Dogs Project. This new project has challenged me as a photographer, but more importantly, it has opened my eyes to the incredible resilience and spirit of these amazing pets.

Photographing three-legged pets has required me to approach my work differently. I’ve developed a special background and floor setup in the studio, where I use strobes to capture the pets in the most beautiful way possible. I realize that the idea of studio lights and flashes can make some people uncomfortable, and honestly, it can be tough for the pets too. These animals have often been through some form of trauma, and now I’m asking them to stand in an unfamiliar space with bright lights flashing — it’s understandable that not all of them are thrilled about it.
Some pets find the experience overwhelming, and that’s perfectly okay. I always respect their boundaries and never push them beyond what they’re comfortable with. But what has touched me the most are the pets who, despite their challenges, rise to the occasion. Some of them tolerate the process simply because they love their families so deeply. They’ll do anything to please their humans, and that loyalty is something truly special to witness. Then, of course, there are the natural-born superstars — those pets who effortlessly strike a pose and seem to understand exactly what we’re trying to achieve. They light up the studio with their confidence and charm.
Through The Tripawed Project, I want to challenge the misconceptions surrounding pets with special needs, particularly those who are missing a limb. Many people shy away from adopting pets with special needs, thinking they require too much extra care. The truth is, while these animals might need some additional attention, they are just as loving, playful, and devoted as any other pet.
My own dog, Jack-Jack, has health issues that we monitor closely every day, and it’s only deepened my understanding of how rewarding it can be to care for a pet who needs a little extra help. These pets don’t see themselves as different — they’re just living their lives, full of love and joy. I hope this project encourages more people to see past a pet’s physical challenges and recognize the wonderful companions they truly are.
